Profile

I’m James, a recent graduate of the University of London’s MSc in Data Science, with a strong command of data analysis and machine learning techniques. I achieved a distinction in my MSc, with an overall mark of 88% (4.0 GPA). I focused my Final Research Project on the area of Computer Vision, specifically classification of wildlife from camera trap images using convolutional neural networks. Since completing my MSc I have continued to work on a number of data science projects in order to increase my knowledge.

I possess 15 years’ prior professional experience in business, coupled with a diverse academic background in mathematics, law and philosophy. During my career I earned successive promotions due to strong performance and organizational impact. This has given me a broad skill set including outstanding research and analysis capabilities, excellent communication skills, and a strong commercial awareness.

Outside of work I enjoy playing the guitar and keeping active through football, running, cycling and climbing.

This is a selection of some of my key projects, including both personal projects and those created in pursuit of my Master’s degree. If you have any questions about any of these projects, please do not hesitate to contact me using the details at the bottom of this page.

Name Description
Image Classification Using deep learning to classify animals at the family level in camera trap images. Sequential convolutional neural networks built using Keras and TensorFlow to address the issue of overfitting in camera trap image classification.
Regression Analysis Predicting Airbnb Prices with Linear Regression, Support Vector Machines (SVM), Random Forest, XGBoost and Neural Networks and R programming language.
Time Series Forecasting Predicting future sales for shop-item pairs using XGBoost Regressor model with Optuna hyperparameter tuning.
Natural Language Processing (NLP) Binary classification of tweets as referring to actual disasters or not, using Linear (Ridge) Classification, Logistic Regression (with stochastic gradient descent), Support Vector Classification and Multinomial Naive Bayes Classification. Improved model then constructed using Bidirectional Encoder Representations from Transformers (BERT), resulting in an F1 score of 0.835 and a top 100-finish on the Kaggle public leaderboard.
Data Visualisation Analysis and visualisation of survey results examining exercise habits before and during the Covid-19 pandemic, using Pandas, NumPy, Seaborn and Matplotlib.
Statistical Analysis Project examining what it takes to succeed in the English Premier league. Includes data collection, cleaning, exploration, visualisation, and statistical analysis.
Recommender System Content-based filtering movie recommender using Bag-of-Words and Term Frequency-Inverse Document Frequency to measure movie similarity.
K-Nearest Neighbours MSc project to build a k-nearest-neighbours classifier from scratch, without using pre-existing libraries. Implemented with three different distance measures (Euclidean, Manhattan, and Chebyshev distance) and nested cross-validation.
Financial Forecasting MSc project using MATLAB to implement an incremental (online) training algorithm for a Time-Delayed Neural Network for financial forecasting.
Exploratory Data Analysis (EDA) Exploratory data analysis examining data from the Olympics, using SQL, Python and Pandas.

DB Orthodontics, Inc.

Due to my strong performance and organizational impact in my role as Export Manager, in 2017 I was entrusted with the setting up and running of DB Orthodontics’ first overseas office. My achievements in this role include:

  • Established the corporation, including obtaining necessary documentation and licenses, negotiating a lease agreement and overseeing all business operations, including HR, finance, marketing and sales
  • Conducted thorough market research, competitive analysis and sales forecasting to define and implement strategic direction of the company
  • Built analytical tools to automate reporting of insights and KPIs to key stakeholders
  • Initiated partnerships with over 350 clients across North, Central and South America
  • Hired and guided the professional development of an office assistant
Unfortunately, due to the impact of Covid-19 the decision was made to close the office in July 2020. This prompted me to undertake my Master’s degree in Data Science.

Prior to running DB Orthodontics, Inc., I held the position of Export Manager for DB Orthodontics Ltd in the UK. Key achievements include:

  • Directed all overseas sales activity, with full responsibility for departmental budgets, training and development of staff, and coordination of export activities
  • Recruited and managed a 3-person team and closely collaborated with production and marketing departments
  • Met and exceeded targets year-on-year, increasing sales by over 560%
  • Established strong relationships with new distributors in 52 different countries
  • Composed three successful bids for government funding, receiving over £20,000
  • Received Employee of the Year Award, Sales Performance Award (twice) and Attendance Award (8 years consecutively)

Queens Award For Enterprise In International Trade

Her Majesty The Queen, on the advice of the Prime Minister

DB Orthodontics was awarded the Queen's Award for outstanding achievement in International Trade. As Export Manager I was responsible for an increase in export turnover of over 130% during the three-year period upon which the award was made.
